Malaysia is a small country, yet it calks up an alarmingly high number of road accidents every year. There are many reasons for this but they may be narrowed down to two main ones.

Firstly, being an increasingly prosperous nation, its citizens can afford to buy vehicles such as motorcars, motorcycles and vans. With so many millions of vehicle using the same limited mileage roads, it is no wonder that motor accidents will occur.

The second reason for road accidents is the attitude of Malaysian drivers. It is well-known that although Malaysians are normally kind and generous, they transform into different beings once behind the wheel. Many of them break traffic rules, run red lights, speed, overtake, queue jump and bully whenever there is a chance to do so. Malaysian motorists do not seem to mind being paralyzed, maimed or killed. “You only live once” seems to be their motto. Many accidents are also caused by bald tyres and faulty brakes and lights.

Having analyzed the main causes of road accidents, the next step is to propose solutions to prevent there mishaps. First, the number of vehicles on the road should be controlled. The fewer cars there are on road, the lesser the chances of vehicles knocking into each other. This has proven successful in Singapore where the number of vehicles enter the city are limited because motorists have to pa hefty sum every them. Furthermore, the island nation has one of the best public transportation systems in the region, so its citizens don’t actually need to own car. If Malaysians adopted to the same policies and improved on its public transportation systems, there would be fewer accidents on the road.

Another solution would be educating Malaysian motorists to better drivers. Basic common courtesy should also be inculcated in them. There lesson can be presented I campaign via the mass media.

There should also be more traffic policemen on surveillance duties so that motorists are kept on their toes. Deterrent punishment should also be meted out to traffic offenders. Finally, the government should spare no expense in improving the road conditions of the country.
